The Fourth of July

Holidays with pets are important. Being prepared for the Fourth of July is no different. Many animals don’t like the fourth due to the copious amounts of fireworks. It’s important to prepare in advance for this holiday if your pet is one of them!

For horses having adequate emergency supplies on hand at all times is vital. It’s important to have a fully stocked emergency kit with vet wrap, gauze, elasticon, bandages, wound sprays, diapers, cotton rolls, gauze etc! Other things I personally would have on hand are tranquilizers like dorm, ace and pain meds like bute and banamine. You never know when you’ll need these and better to have them and not need them than need them and not have them. Also, your vet wants to enjoy their holiday too!

For dogs, having things on hand is equally important! Though, they often are not as injury prone as horses. If your pet has anxiety about storms or fireworks call your vets June 15th or so. Get prepared early and don’t leave it to the last minute. Vets get bombarded with calls the closer it gets to the holiday and will appreciate you thinking ahead. The vets will know what works best for your pet and there are several different options to try. If one doesn’t work there are other options.

Some non medical things you can try are a thunder shirt, playing relaxing music, watching tv shows with them, the dog relaxation/ pheromone collars. Other things you can do is make sure they get plenty of exercise and try tire them out! All these things will help.

Remember your pets don’t understand it’s just your neighbor celebrating Americas independence. They don’t understand that it’s just fireworks. Plus their senses are much better than ours. Enjoy the day but prepare in advance. Happy Fourth of July and god bless America!
